Better Together: Why Fayette County Has a Community Foundation

Why Fayette County Has a Community Foundation

And Why It Matters More Thank You Think

If you’ve ever wondered why Fayette County has a Community Foundation—or what role it plays beyond managing charitable funds—you’re not alone. Community foundations can feel behind-the-scenes, quietly supporting good work without a lot of fanfare. But in a rural county like ours, a community foundation isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

So let’s talk plainly about why the Fayette Community Foundation exists, what purpose it serves, and why it matters to the long-term health of Fayette County—and where you might see our work show up in your life!

Why We Exist

At its core, the Fayette Community Foundation exists to strengthen the quality of life in Fayette County—now and for generations to come.

Our mission is simple and powerful: To inspire a spirit of philanthropy and leadership in Fayette County to enhance the quality of life.

We do this by connecting people who care deeply about this community with the causes and organizations doing the work on the ground. Whether someone wants to support education, parks, the arts, health, housing, or future opportunities we can’t yet imagine, the Foundation provides a trusted structure to turn generosity into lasting impact.

What a Community Foundation Does—Especially in a Rural Community

In larger cities, resources, funding streams, and institutional support often exist in abundance. Rural communities don’t always have that luxury. That’s where a community foundation becomes a powerful equalizer.

In Fayette County, the Community Foundation serves as:

  • A steward of local generosity, ensuring charitable gifts are protected, invested wisely, and used as intended
  • A connector, bringing together donors, nonprofits, civic leaders, and partners who might not otherwise collaborate
  • A stabilizer, providing consistent grant funding year after year—even when economic conditions change
  • A strategist, helping our community think long-term instead of just reacting to immediate needs

In rural communities, sustainability matters. A community foundation helps ensure that progress doesn’t disappear when a grant cycle ends or a leadership role changes.

Why Having Our Own Foundation Matters

You might be thinking that the organizations and projects we fund could collect donations and manage their wealth on their own—that the donors could have set up trusts for them. That’s true. That is a possibility. However, that’s not the whole story and the stewardship of those funds is only one part of our work.

One of the most important—and often least understood—roles of the Fayette Community Foundation is this:

We bring resources into Fayette County that would not come here otherwise.

Yes, growing charitable funds from generous local donors is a critical part of our work. But that’s only part of the story.

Because we exist as a community foundation:

  • We can seek out competitive grants from outside foundations and institutions
  • We can serve as a trusted local partner for state and national funders
  • We can administer and manage complex grants, ensuring accountability and impact
  • We can leverage local dollars to unlock much larger investments

Without a community foundation in place, many of these opportunities simply wouldn’t be available to Fayette County. Large funders often require a local philanthropic institution to manage funds responsibly, coordinate partners, and ensure long-term sustainability. That’s work individual nonprofits cannot always take on alone.

Supporting Nonprofits Beyond the Check

The Fayette Community Foundation doesn’t just make grants and manage disbursements—we help build capacity.

Through grants from our unrestricted endowment, discretionary funds, and donor-advised funds, we support nonprofit organizations as they respond to the evolving needs of our community. Just as importantly, we help organizations strengthen their leadership, planning, and collaboration so they can serve Fayette County more effectively.

Strong nonprofits create strong communities—and we are committed to helping them thrive.

A Legacy That Lasts

Founded in 1986 by local leaders who saw the need for a permanent philanthropic resource, the Foundation began with a single fund of $20,000. Today, thanks to generations of generosity, we steward more than $19 million in endowments and manage over 190 permanent funds.

Those funds represent more than dollars. They represent values, hopes, and deep belief in Fayette County’s future.

Whether established today or through estate planning, each endowment ensures that a donor’s charitable intentions continue to make a difference—supporting causes they care about long after their lifetime.

Why This Matters

A community foundation belongs to the community it serves.

It exists so that Fayette County has:

  • A place to hold collective generosity
  • A way to invest in long-term solutions
  • A trusted partner to attract outside resources
  • A steady hand guiding philanthropy through change

The Fayette Community Foundation exists because rural communities deserve the same opportunities to thrive, grow, and plan for the future as anywhere else.

And because Fayette County believes in taking care of its own—today, tomorrow, and generations from now.
